Three Judge Bench of Supreme Court comprising of CJI NV Ramana, Justice Krishna Murari and Justice Hima Kohli passed an Order to set up an oversight Committee which was headed by Former Judge of Supreme Court Justice B Sudershan Reddy.
The plans that were made to reduce the damages caused by illegal Mining in Districts of Bellary, Chitradurga and Tumkur of Karnataka will be approved by Justice Reddy.
The Comprehensive Environmental Plans for Mining Impact Zones (CEPMIZ) plan was submitted by Karnataka Government to raise a fund in which 10% of sales of private miners will be collected for developmental purposes.
For the submission of reports on the plans and its execution made by Comprehensive Environmental Plans for Mining Impact Zones another Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Corporation (KMERC) authority was set up by the State Government.
The Rules for oversight committee will be made by the State as directed by Court and Advocate Prshant Bhushan representing the Petitioner Samaj Parivartan Samudaya is also affirmed the decision of making Justice Reddy a monitor and suggested to make him Final Authority.
On April 2020, the Application filed by the State to release the fund as the Central Empowered Committee (CEC) has passed the plan. Court was informed that money has been transferred in the Bank of India interest bearing account of State.
In the plan of Karnataka Mining Environment Restoration Corporation development of health, education, sanitization, drinking water etc was included with a plan to set up a railway in three districts.
The Court has wondered that whether the cost of Rs. 24,996.71 Crores would be sufficient for such a big project when it is starting after 10 years of approval.
