Johnny Depp, a famous Hollywood actor, 57- years old, filed an appeal to the Court of appeals against the decision of the High Court, which stated that he assaulted his ex-wife, Amber Heard, and made her fear life.
He had also sued the Sun’s publisher in a libel case for calling him a “wife-beater” in his column.
He took legal action against the News Group Newspaper (NGN) who was the paper’s parent company – after the column referred to him attacking his ex-wife during their relationship.
However, this case was dismissed as NGN succeeded to prove that the article was substantially true.
Johnny Depp tried to appeal against the decision of the dismissal but was not permitted to do so by the Judge of the Court – Justice Nicol.
The Judge directed him to pay £630,000 to NGN as the publisher’s legal fees and the remainder to be paid after the assessments of the costs.
Furthermore, Justice Nicol asked the actor to file an appeal directly to the Court of appeal to overturn his decision passed.
The actor’s ground of appeal is unknown, and Justice Nicol concluded that 12/14 allegations made against him did occur as reported by the NGN.
Days before the judgement was passed, Johnny Depp stated that he was asked to resign from his role in the Harry Potter spin-off franchise Fantastic beasts by Warner Brothers.
Johnny Depp further passed this statement in the media that “The surreal judgment of the court in the UK will not change my fight, to tell the truth, and I confirm that I plan to appeal.”
Solicitor Jenny Afia stated that “The judgment is so flawed that it would be ridiculous for Mr Depp not to appeal this decision.” And called the High court’s judgement “as perverse as it is bewildering”
Elaine Charlson Bredehoft, Amber Heard’s lawyer, stated that those who were present during the decision-making process would be satisfied by the judgement passed as it was not a surprise for them. He further added that they would present a piece of very detailed evidence.
However, Johnny Depp states that he intends to prove the allegations against him false and therefore filed an appeal against the orders passed by the Court.
