The Kerala High Court sought the Centre’s response to a compensation petition filed by the mother of a fisherman who was allegedly aboard a fishing vessel fired upon by two Italian marines in 2012 and subsequently committed suicide due to the trauma of the incident.
The petitioner claimed that the boat owner failed to forward her son’s name as one of the persons on board the vessel, and as a result, he neither got counselling or compensation for the trauma he had suffered.
The Petition further claimed that the petitioner’s son committed suicide as a result of the trauma that he had experienced due to the incident.
The Supreme Court earlier ordered that Rs. 4 crore be given to the dependents of the two deceased fishermen, with the remaining Rs. 2 crore going to the vessel owner.
The Supreme Court had delegated supervision of the disbursement to the Kerala High Court.
The Kerala High Court has now asked the Central Government Counsel to file a written statement and scheduled a hearing after two weeks.
