A summon has been issued by a local court in Guwahati to Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia in relation to a defamation suit filed by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. Sisodia had been directed to appear before the court on 29th September.
The Chief Judicial Magistrate observed in this regard:
“Prima facie it is seen that some derogatory remarks are made by the accused person against the complainant, which, if not true, can malign the reputation of the complainant.”
About The Matter:
The Assam CM has complained of defamatory remarks made against him by Sisodia at a press conference. Sisodia had made allegations of corruption against the him.
In the press conference, Sisodia had made allegations that the Assam Government had given contracts to Biswa’s wife’s firms and son’s business partner to supply Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) kits above market rates during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Later, Sisodia’s Aam Admi party also uploaded a YouTube video in this regard.
The allegations made were found by the Assam CM to harm his public reputation. The court took cognisance of the complaint made by the Assam CM. It was satisfied to proceed against Sisodia for defamation under the Indian Penal Code.
Consequently, Manish Sisodia has been asked to appear before the court on September 29th, 2022.
