The Director General of Prisons has recently been asked by the Delhi High Court for a response about the steps that should be taken to improve prison operations in order to maintain order among inmates and prevent violent incidents.
Justice Siddharth Mridul and Justice Anup J. Bhambhani were sitting on a Division Bench to hear a petition that raised the subject of murders perpetrated against inmates by jail authorities.
The Special Bench has been considering the issue of what amounts “extreme force” when it comes to punishing misbehaving inmates who are being held in jails.
Assistance was sought by the Director General of Prisons, Delhi, Mr. Sandeep Goel, by the Court on July 15. He apprised the Bench that he will be filing an affidavit with suggestions on the issues brought up.
A prisoner named Sameer filed a plea saying that jail officials at Tihar Jail beat him and sought his transfer to another prison complex, alleging victimisation at the hands of such officials. The alleged incident took place on October 28, 2020.
The Bench has previously expressed its shock at the matter and has sought the authorities for a response about the actions taken against the responsible officers as well as other issues stated in the plea.
