The Delhi High Court has taken corrective action after several labourers involved in renovation of the High Court building were seen working without safety gear.
A senior official with the Delhi High Court administration told Bar & Bench that they have taken serious note of the violation and have sought an explanation from the Public Works Department (PWD) – the government body tasked with maintaining the High Court premises.
The official said that PWD had outsourced the work to a contractor and safety kits had been provided to workers but they were not wearing them.
An official of the PWD has also been deputed as nodal officer to conduct random checks to ensure essential safety methods are in place. The official said:
“We have taken serious note of the issue and PWD was asked for an explanation. We have directed them to ensure compliance with all safety laws and random checks will also be carried out by a nodal officer of PWD to ensure workers are working with all safety measures in place.”
On Monday, a tweet was published on account of the All India Central Council of Trade Unions, Delhi (AICCTU) highlighting how several labourers involved in the renovation of the Delhi High Court building were working without Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) kits.
Several workers could be seen climbing mechanical ladders and other arrangements to reach the roof and higher levels of the building.
