On Monday, 06 December, the Delhi High Court ordered the Police Commissioner to seek steps for the installation of CCTV cameras in the important points of the Chandni Chowk.
The Bench of Justice Vipin Sanghi and Justice Jastmeet Singh noticed that, “it is not dawning on you that there is delay. What steps have you taken since the last date on installing CCTVs? Not lifted even your little finger till now.”
The Court slashed the Counsel representing the Delhi Police stating that they have issued multiple directions with the same regard but no action was taken yet. “We are compelled to pass such orders since nothing is happening. After this order, now even these officers will wake up.”
The Bench ordered this direction while hearing the Plea by Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal requesting a proper Order to install the CCTV cameras and eradicate the entry of illegal hawkers or vendors from the ‘no hawking area’ in the area which had undergone redevelopment recently.
“Anybody encroaching upon public places must be removed and it cannot be permitted that the whole pavements in markets are encroached leaving no space for people to walk”, the Delhi High Court asserted.
The Bench has ordered the Municipal Corporation to come up with a “street vending plan.”
The Bench has also asked the experts to be nominated from Shahjanabad redevelopment Corporation, Delhi School of Planning and IIT Delhi to instantly look into the matter of preparing the street vending plan.
The High Court adjourned the matter for December 28 in case the authorities failed to follow the orders issued to them.
