Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud emphasized that courts should embrace technology willingly and not merely because they are urged to do so.
He pointed to a recent order he issued, which mandated that all High Courts and tribunals provide hybrid hearings for lawyers and litigants. CJI Chandrachud stressed that the adoption of technology in the legal system must be accompanied by a shift in the mindset of judges, legal professionals, and administrative staff.
CJI stated, “In our revolution to make courtrooms across the country accessible to lawyers and litigants, we must not leave anyone behind.”
CJI Chandrachud made these remarks during the inaugural event of the platinum jubilee celebrations of the Rajasthan High Court on October 14. He commended the Rajasthan High Court for its video conferencing facility, allowing counsel from one location to argue before a bench at another location, showcasing the limitless potential of technology.
The Chief Justice also highlighted the challenges faced by women lawyers, who often juggle childcare, societal, and familial responsibilities along with their legal careers. He called for a reflection on why such experiences have become normalized and emphasized the responsibility of institutions to promote change.
Additionally, CJI Chandrachud stressed the importance of providing skill training to court staff to prepare them for modern workforce challenges. He noted that even the designation and uniforms of staff have been revised to reflect changing times and attitudes in India.
The CJI’s comments underline the significance of technology adoption in the legal system while emphasizing the need for a broader cultural shift and training to ensure that everyone benefits from these technological advancements.
