The Chief Justice of India (CJI), UU Lalit, has been sent a letter by the Bar Council of India (BCI) asking him to take into consideration the elevation of judges from those High Courts and States that are not represented in the Supreme Court.
Manan Kumar Mishra, the Chairman of the BCI, wrote the CJI a letter on Monday stating that although some larger States have a sizable population, they have not had a representative in the Supreme Court for a number of months.
“Therefore, it is our humble request to take into account this important aspect of the matter in course of the meeting of the Collegium,” the letter said.
The letter emphasised that when a recommendation to this effect was brought up in a meeting with Law Minister Kiren Rijiju, he was optimistic and realistic about the situation.
