In the conference of High Court Chief Justices, the Chief Justice of India NV Ramana made a request to make recommendations for earliest appointment of Judges in High Court.
This conference got organized after six years in which Chief Justice of India requested to forward the names for elevation in High Courts without delay as there are huge vacancies in 25 High Court of Country.
“I request the Chief Justices of High Courts, which are still having numbers of Vacancies, to forward the names for elevation at the earliest,” said by Chief Justice of India. This conference was also attended by Justice Uday Ulalit and Justice A M Khanwikar.
The High Courts have huge vacancies as 35% of posts are vacant in 125 High Courts. Data with Department of Justice showed that 387 seats of Judges are vacant out of 1104 seats in total.
The Chief Justice of India has pointed out that it is crucial topic which he raised when for the first time he interacted with High Court Chief Justices over online conference in June 2021.
“I have also requested all of you, in our very first online interaction, to expedite the process of recommending names for elevation to high courts, with an emphasis on social diversity. I am happy to note that the response from some of the high courts has been extremely encouraging. Due to our collective efforts, we could fill 126 vacancies in various High Courts, in less than a year.”
“We are expecting 50 more appointments. This remarkable feat could be achieved because of your wholehearted co-operation and commitment to the institution,” added the Chief Justice of India.
After the High Court collegiums give names for elevation to Supreme Court collegium then they pass the name to Government. Government either accept it or give back for review if collegium send same name again then Government have to appoint such person.
Chief Justice of India has also addressed on the issues faced in COVID-19 and appreciated High Court Chief Justices for managing the smooth functioning of Court during this period.
“At the same time, we could evolve stable online systems to make sure that the functioning of the Courts is not adversely affected. We did our best to promote access to justice,” added Justice Ramana.
