Chandigarh Police set up Special Cell for protection of runaway couples

An order was issued by the SP (Headquarters), Manoj Kumar for setting up a Special cell for the protection of runaway couples at the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit (AHTU), Sector 17. The Special cell will be headed by the in charge of the AHTU under the supervision of the SP, Women and Child Safety Unit.

The Special cell will collect information and maintain a database of the runaway couple who approach District and Session Judges in Chandigarh for protection. Besides, the Emergency Response Service System (ERSS) helpline, a special helpline number has also been set up to acknowledge and provide protection to such couples.

The order also states that on receipt of information of Violence against any inter-caste or inter-religion couple or Honor Killing, FIR will be registered and the DSP will be intimated who will ensure that an effective Investigation is concluded within a period of 60 to 90 days.

The Special cell will also ensure the safety of the couple or the family by shifting them to safe houses if needed. Lastly, the order states that non-compliance with the directions as given will be considered as misconduct on part of the Police Officer and will lead to Departmental action.
