The Akhila Bharath Veerashaiva Mahasabha has written to the State Government to take necessary measure to avoid the misuse of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Acts, 1989.
Mahasabha’s Dharwad district unit President Gururaj Hunasimarad stated that, “Some people with ulterior motives were using the law by filing false complaints against popular leaders and honest officers to harass them and the officials and leader of the Veerashaiva – Lingayat community are being targeted”.
They further stated that the law should be used more “Judiciously” and misuse of the Law by some section is creating heavy division among the society. The State Government should take strict and necessary steps to stop and punish the ones misusing the law.
Gururaj Hunasaimarad citing an example of the Police Officials filing a first information report (FIR) against the chairman of the Legislative Council, Basavaraj Horatti along with five others on the grounds of the complaint filed by some people, contended that, “How can one discharge duties judiciously with such intimidating actions?”
Gururaj inferred by stating that if such intimidation prolongs then the Mahasabha would initiate a State – wide agitation.
