A special POCSO court in Bahraich, Uttar Pradesh, handed down a 23-year prison sentence to a man convicted of raping a 12-year-old girl.
The incident had occurred on June 12, 2023, in a village under the jurisdiction of Kaiserganj police station.
The convicted individual, identified as Sonu, also known by the alias Bharat, was 23 years old at the time of committing the heinous crime.
Special Additional Sessions Judge Varun Mohit Nigam presided over the trial, and upon finding Sonu guilty of the charges, he delivered a stern verdict on Thursday.
Apart from the lengthy jail term, the court also ordered Sonu to pay a fine amounting to over Rs one lakh.
Notably, the entire fine sum will be granted to the young victim to aid her in coping with the aftermath of the traumatic incident.
During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence demonstrating that on the fateful day, the minor victim had gone to a field in the village to defecate when Sonu attacked her.
The prosecution’s case was vigorously represented by Special District Government Advocate Sant Pratap Singh, who advocated for justice for the innocent victim.
