A disturbing claim circulating on different social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram and on X, in this image, inside courtroom, it is being alleged that a Pakistani court ordered a victim’s brother to rape the accused’s sister as revenge. However, Law Insider in it’s Investigation found it is a false and misleading.
Complete and real Story-
The confusion stems from a 2017 incident in Multan, Pakistan, where a local jirga (informal village council) unlawfully directed a so called “revenge rape” after a man assaulted a young girl. The council ordered the victim’s brother to rape the perpetrator’s sister. This ruling sparked outrage, and Pakistani authorities arrested members of the jirga involved.
Importantly, this was never a decision of Pakistan’s official judiciary or courts. The practice of jirgas issuing extrajudicial punishments has long been condemned by human rights organisations, and in such cases, the state has acted against those responsible.
The viral image being shared, which shows a courtroom scene with lawyers and police, is unrelated to the 2017 case. It has been wrongly paired with the claim, giving the impression that Pakistan’s judiciary endorsed such an order — something that did not happen.
Human rights activists continue to call for stronger enforcement against illegal jirga rulings to prevent such abuses in the future.
