Chinese Foreign Office spokesperson Wang Wenbin on February 14, said that China hoped India would not make “Irresponsible remarks” on the border situation and that both sides “Should follow through on agreements”.
The comments came a day after the Indian External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke in Melbourne following a meeting with his Australian counterpart Marise Payne, that China had violated written agreements by amassing troops.
S Jaishankar said that the situation [at the LAC in Ladakh] arose due to the disregard by China in 2020 of written agreements with India not to amass forces at the border.
“So, when a large country disregards written commitments, I think it’s an issue of a legitimate concern for the entire international community,” he added.
The Chinese spokesperson was asked at a media briefing to comment on External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar blaming China for the ongoing border conflict. While asking India to take concrete actions and work with China to jointly safeguard peace and tranquility of the border area, Wang Wenbin said that the ins and outs of the situation on the China-India border are very clear and the responsibility does not lie with China.
The Chinese spokesperson also cleared the stand of China by saying,
“China always maintains that we should follow through on treaties and agreements we signed and we jointly uphold peace and tranquillity at the border region.”
At present China and India are in communication on further improving border management and confidence-building measures. As per the reports, during the 14th round of talks held last month, there was no actual breakthrough. Although, both sides released a joint statement saying the two sides would consolidate outcomes, maintain communication through military and diplomatic channels, and stability along the border.
