On September 2, the Law Ministry announced that President Droupadi Murmu has appointed Justice D.Y. Chandrachud as the executive chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA).
After Justice U.U. Lalit was appointed the 49th Chief Justice of India, Justice Chandrachud assumed the vacancy.
Under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987, the NALSA was established to offer free legal services to the less fortunate members of society.
The executive chairperson of the Authority is the second-most senior judge on the Supreme Court of India, who serves as the Authority’s Patron-in-Chief.
Justice Chandrachud formerly served as the Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court and a judge of the Bombay High Court before being appointed to the position of judge of the Supreme Court.
After CJI UU Lalit’s retirement, Justice DY Chandrachud will likely serve as the 50th Chief Justice of India from November 2022. He is the son of the 16th and longest-serving Chief Justice of India, Justice YV Chandrachud.
