The alleged creator of the mobile application ‘Sulli Deals’, Aumkareshwar Thakur filed a plea in the Supreme court seeking clubbing of FIRs in relation to the Sulli Deals case. The Supreme Court in this regard has sought responses from state governments of Delhi, Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra.
A Bench of Justice Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Justice MM Sundresh pondered upon whether the plea can be allowed as the accused has been charged for distinct offences in relation to creation of two different apps, that is, Sulli Deals and Bulli Bai.
The Bench noted that there were multiple uploads on the app, and there were different FIRs in connection with it. The bench has refused the petitioner’s request to put stay on the investigation.
The accused was charged for promoting hostility between different communities. The app Sulli Deals surfaced initially in July 2021 on content sharing platform GitHub. The app staged ‘auctions’ for prominent Muslim women. Hundreds of women were targeted through this app.
Bull Bai was a similar app created by Neeraj Bishnoi who was arrested on January 6th 2022. Aumkareshwar Thakur was arrested on January 9th.
Thakur and Bishnoi were both granted bail by the Patiala House Court in Delhi in March this year in the case of sexual harassment filed by the Delhi Police. But bail was denied to them in Mumbai.
In June, they were granted bail in Mumbai by a sessions court & since then all the accused have been on bail since then.
