The chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, Swati Maliwal has issued a notice to the Delhi Police alleging them to take actions who have used pictures of women without her consent on their app.
GitHub is a popular hosting platform, when a user selected the “deal of the day” option, it displayed the picture of women.
The app has already posted many pictures of women, taking pictures from their social media accounts.
The women complained that they were threatened, harassed and ridiculed after their pictures were used, they have also complained that they were never asked for their consent on uploading their pictures.
According to a woman, she alleges that she was mocked as the screenshots were uploaded on Twitter and were threatened with gang rape.
As the screenshots were getting viral, Erica Brascia the COO of GitHub responded that the accounts have been suspended on Twitter.
The Police has stated that the FIR invokes Section 509 (word or act intended to outrage the modesty of a woman) of IPC and several other Sections of the IT Act have also been mentioned.
DCP Crimes against Women, Vrinda Shukla said: “This is a very serious crime and we are investigating it. The FIR has been filed against the unknown accused. As part of the probe, we will be sending notices to the website in order to trace the accused. The digital footprints of the people behind the app will be traced.”
Swati Maliwal has asked the police for a copy of the registered FIR file, details of the accused, steps taken to identify and arrest the accused in case of non-arrest, and all the detailed reports pertaining to the action taken by the police on the matter.
Swati Maliwal has asked the police to reply within a week.
