The Supreme Court has commenced hearings on petitions seeking the legalization of same-sex marriages, which the government is strongly opposing.
The government argued in court yesterday that the creation of a new social relationship can only be decided by Parliament.
Today, the Centre requested that all states and Union Territories be made parties to the proceedings regarding the pleas for legal recognition of same-sex marriages.
Last year, the Supreme Court had asked the Centre to respond to separate pleas made by two gay couples who sought the enforcement of their right to marry and asked the relevant authorities to register their marriages under the Special Marriage Act.
