Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria is an Indian politician belongs to Indian National Congress and Cabinet minister of the State of Punjab holding the charges of the ministries of Revenue, Rehabilitation & Disaster Management and Water Resources. 

He is an associate of Punjab Legislative Assembly and symbolizes Raja Sansi. He  He is a B,Sc Non Medical Graduate from Khalsa College, Amritsar in 1976. He is an Agriculturist by profession and has a business of his own. He has an interest on the fields of Sports and Politics. Till now, he visited five foreign Countries i.e. U.S.A, Europe, Canada, Singapore and Pakistan.

In 1997, he first contested for Punjab Legislative Assembly on the ticket of Congress from Raja Sansi but was fruitless. He again contested from Raja Sansi in 2002 as a free candidate, but lost the election due to some votes.

He also contested the 2004 Lok Sabha election from Taran Taran constituency. However, he was successful during 2007 Vidhan Sabha elections, when he won from Raja Sansi with a big margin. He was re-elected MLA for Raja Sansi in 2012.

He is designated as MLA repeatedly for the 3rd time in 2017 from Rajasansi constituency in the Punjab Legislative Assembly where he overpowered Vir Singh Lopoke of the Shiromani Akali Dal.

He was the Chairman of Punjab Mandi Board during Capt. Amrinder Singh’s government and also Vice President of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee.

He was one of the 42 INC MLAs who put forward their resignation in objection of a judgment of the Supreme Court of India ruling the Punjab’s extinction of the Sutlej-Yamuna Link (SYL) water channel as unauthorized.

LegaL Background:

Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria was convicted on 11th October, 1977. Case no. 276/77 State v. Sukhbinder Singh & Others. The charge was framed by the Police Station – Civil line District.

He was punished by the Amritsar Court by Ex – Officio Additional Session Judge T.S. Cheema. The charge was framed on 07th October, 1978 under The Indian Penal Code (IPC) Section 366 which deals with the charges related to kidnapping, abducting or inducing woman to compel her marriage, etc. and Section – 511 which deals with the charges allied to attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment.

The Honorable Punjab and Haryana High Court vide request date 15th July, 1980 has kept up the conviction and put aside the detainment and fine and has discharged waiting on the post trial process for a time of multi year as outfitting bail obligation of Rs.2000/ – for his good conduct.
