Bollywood Actress Kangana Ranaut and her sister Rangoli Chandel filed a petition in the Bombay High Court on November 22.
The petition has requested to cancel the FIR registered against them by Mumbai Police for allegedly promoting enmity between groups on the grounds of religion through their tweets.
The counsel appearing for Kangana and Rangoli, Rizwan Siddiquee, told that the petition requests to stay the summons against them to appear before the police for questioning and also direct the police to avoid force against them.
It was on October 17, Magistrate Jaydeo Ghule of Bandra Magistrate Court ordered an investigation on a complaint filed before the court by casting director and fitness trainer Munnawarali Sayyed against Kangana and Rangoli seeking to dig out the real motive of the offensive post on social media.
Sayyed mentioned several posts published by Kangana and Rangoli including the complaint about the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput, an incident of lynching of two seers in Maharashtra’s Palghar district, and a post comparing Mumbai with Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). The FIR was filed charging IPC sections 153-A (promoting enmity between different groups on the grounds of religion, race), 295-A (deliberate acts hurting religious sentiments) and 124-A (sedition), 34 (common intention) against the accused. The police summoned the sisters thrice to appear before the police to record their statements.
The last summons was issued last week asking Ranaut to appear before the police on November 23 and Chandel on November 24.
