Hathras District Magistrate Praveen Kumar Laxkar has been transferred to Mirzapur.
Under Laxkar’s jurisdiction, the case of gang-rape and murder of a 19-year-old Dalit woman was being handled.
The Uttar Pradesh government has transferred 16 IAS officers.
Earlier, the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court had expressed its concerns over the fairness of the investigation being done in the case.
The girl was allegedly raped by the four men in Hathras on September 14.
She later died due to her injuries at a hospital in Delhi on September 29. The victim was cremated near her home on September 30.
The handling of the case by Uttar Pradesh Police – particularly the late-night cremation of the victim allegedly without the family’s approval – led to angry protests across the country. The officials, however, said the cremation was done “as per the wishes of the family.”
