Today Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Ordinance, 2020 has been promulgated with the approval of the Governor Anandiben Patel.

Earlier this week Yogi Govt passes ordinance against “Love Jihad and unlawful religious conversions”

Uttar Pradesh state cabinet committee presided over by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath approved the draft ordinance to curb forcible or “dishonest” religious conversions including the marriages only for the illegal conversion. Committee approved 10 years of jail term as the punishment for the violations under this act.

The ordinance reads, marriage will be declared “null and void” if the conversion of a woman is solely for that purpose, and those wishing to change their religion after marriage need to apply to the district magistrate.
