The Supreme Court will inaugurate a statue of Dr. BR Ambedkar. Currently under construction in Manesar, Haryana, the statue will be transported to the Supreme Court upon completion.
This decision follows persistent requests from a group of lawyers associated with the Ambedkarite movement.
In December of the previous year, they wrote to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, urging the installation of a statue of Dr. Ambedkar on the Supreme Court lawns.
The Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) also made a representation in September this year, advocating for the statue.
Notably, the Madras High Court’s Full Court, on April 11, reaffirmed its earlier decision not to display photos, statues, or portraits of leaders other than Mahatma Gandhi and Saint Thiruvalluvar in Tamil Nadu courts and court premises.
Despite various advocates’ associations’ requests for a portrait of Dr. Ambedkar inside courts being rejected, the State government, on July 25, assured that the existing statues and portraits of Dr. BR Ambedkar would be maintained.
Dr. Ambedkar, originally from the Mahar caste, faced discrimination as an untouchable Dalit. Despite these challenges, he overcame barriers to education, ultimately holding 26 degrees and titles.
As the Chairman of the Drafting Committee, he played a pivotal role in crafting the Indian Constitution and is recognized as its architect.
