On Monday, the Supreme Court of India consented to provide an extension of 4 months to Tamil Nadu State Election Commission (TNSEC) for completion of the course of Election of Urban Local Bodies in the State.

A Bench comprising Chief Justice of India NV Ramana, Justice Surya Kant and Justice Hima Kohli gave the directions regarding an application filed by the Commission looking for extension of time for conducting elections in the 9 recently cut regions in the State and notifying about the process in Urban Local Bodies in the State of Tamil Nadu.

The Bench also rejected a Plea which was seeking an extension of seven months and called the reasons ‘silly’.

“Mr. Rohatgi, even though reasons are very silly, we want to give some time. When do you want?“, asked CJI to Senior Advocate Mukul Rohatgi who was appearing on the behalf of Tamil Nadu State Election Commission.

Mr. Rohatgi presented that the time is being looked for due to these new corporations and dimensions that have arisen.

Earlier, the Supreme Court ordered the State Election Commission in Tamil Nadu to finish up the whole course of the nearby body decisions in the nine recently cut regions by September 15, 2021, including distribution/notice of political race plan and the consequence of the races.

The Apex Court had recently ordered the State in December 2019 to delimit the nine recently comprised areas within the period of 90 days.

However, the State had required over year and a half to complete the same and looked for 6 additional months to conduct election.
