On 19th November, 2021 Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi announced the revocation of much debated ‘farm laws.’ The announcement was made on the day of Guru Nanak Jayanti, which is mainly celebrated by Sikhs.
PM Narendra Modi stated in the announcement, ‘While apologizing to the nation, I want to say with a sincere and pure heart that maybe something was lacking in our tapasya (dedication) that we could not explain the truth, as clear as the light of the diya, to some of our farmer brothers. But today is Prakash Parv, not the time to blame anyone. Today, I want to tell the country that we have decided to repeal the three farm laws.’
Farmers from the states of Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan started protesting against the said farm laws near the border of Delhi on 26th November, 2020. The Central Government has faced major backlash and protests in the northern states of the country.
The announcement is made prior to the upcoming elections in the states of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab.
A top farmer’s leader, Rakesh Tikait argued that the protesters would wait till the laws were repealed in the session starting on November 29. The much debated three farm laws are- the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020.
Rahul Gandhi, leader of opposition party Congress stated on his twitter account, ‘Farmers’ satyagraha has defeated arrogance. Congratulations for this victory over injustice.’
The three contentious farm laws are The Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020, The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act 2020, which were passed by the Union government in September last year.
