Now that India’s two-year term begins in the UNSC (United Nations Security Council) as a non-permanent member, the key areas to focus on would be counter-terrorism and maritime security for international peace.
It has a clear vision and strategy to combat international terrorism. This will be the eighth time India has been voted as a non-permanent member.
India has, in recent times, made it several times clear on the international stage that it needs to be taken more seriously.
India now has an opportunity to express its concerns over the abuse of ICT by terrorists and international funding for terrorism.
India is likely to back Tunisia, which will be joining in January as well. Tunisia is also holding a debate over threats to international peace and security to commemorate the adoption of resolution 1373 as it now completes two decades.
India will be taken through the five-priority list for an evolved multilateral system. The list includes an effective response to international terrorism, novel opportunities for progress, tech with a human touch, etc.
As India is one of the largest contributors to peacekeeping troops in the United Nations, it is likely to seek reforms for international peace through ICT.
