Libya’s High National Election’s Committee listed, deceased dictator Muammar Gaddafi’s son Saif al-Islam, in the category of ineligible candidates for running of President in the December, 2021 Presidential elections.
Saif al-Islam is rejected to run for the Presidential elections as he was sentenced to death by a court in Tripoli in 2015 for using violence against public who were protesting against his deceased father Muammar Gaddafi the dictator of Libya in 2011.The judgement is still being questioned by Libya’s rival authorities.
Saif al-Islam is also stated as a fugitive by the International Criminal Court which filed charges against for crimes against humanity related to the protests of 2011.
On 24th December 2021, Libya is said to be conducting Presidential elections after many years of attempts by the United Nations to bring upon a democratic formation of the Nation.
The deceased dictator’s son Saif Al-Islam was captured by protestors and fighters in the town of Zintan in 2011 when the dictatorship of his father was ended after 40 years. After he was released in June 2017, Saif al-Islam made his first public appearance on 14th November, 2021 for the submission of his candidacy documents.
After the announcement of Saif al-Islam being a likely candidate for the elections, several other ‘high-profile’ individuals applied for candidacy. Two of the said candidates are Military Commander Khalifa Hifter and Libya’s interim Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah.
The much-anticipated judgement is even now challenged as there are several unresolved affairs over the laws that govern the elections, armed rebellion’s oppression towards each other and foreign threats from countries like Syria and Russia.
