Kerala High Court while hearing a Public Interest Litigation over the actions of the Lakshadweep’s new administration which has caused an uproar not only there but also in Kerala stated that the events transpiring in the Island were being noticed by the Court.
Justice Vinod Chandran stated that they were aware of what’s been happening there and that they do not need to turn to social media and news reports as they have their own way to know things.
The court also stayed the transfer of two assistant public prosecutors from the two islands to Kavarati and demanded that the administrator explain the reasons behind the transfer and even asked them to return to government service.
All the top political parties aside from BJP in Kerala are wrought up about the way things are transpiring under the new administrator of the Union Territory Praful Patel, former Gujarat Home Minister.
The two times former Chief Minister of Kerala, Oommen Chandy claimed that upon the arrival of Patel the peace and tranquility in the UT has been destroyed.
“All along the administration was done by an IAS officer and things changed for the worse with the arrival of Patel. The introduction of the Goonda Act at a place like the island, where the crime rate is relatively low and harassing people by using it to take action against those people who protested during the CAA and NRC. Also the way the quarantine rules was imposed there also led to spread of Covid. Also the act of deleting beef from the menu and the revoking of prohibition rules have all caused unrest and these things should not happen,” said the former CM.
VD Satheesan, New leader of opposition in the Kerala assembly wrote a letter to Union Home Minister Amit Shah stating that Praful should be recalled as his acts are having a bad impact on the UT.
