Hockey Coach Sandeep Sangwan moved to the Delhi High Court seeking an Order for the Government to consider him for the Dronacharya Award (Regular Category) for the year 2021 for his performance as a coach.
On November 12, Justice Rekha Palli asked the Centre to look into the matter and listed the hearing.
Sandeep Sangwan, who claims to be a renowned Hockey Coach, said he was ignored by the Centre from being considered for the Dronacharya Award despite his meritorious achievements listed by the Selection Committee for Sports Award 2021.
Additional Solicitor General Chetan Sharma represented the Centre. The Plea sought direction from the concerned authorities to call for the records and quashing of the November 2 decision of the Ministry by which Sangwan was excluded from the award.
The Plea also sought to direct the Ministry to additionally confer the Dronacharya Award (Regular Category) for 2021 on Sangwan for his performance as a coach on merit as per the points system introduced in compliance with the High Court’s previous Orders.
The Petitioner contended that he was a highly qualified and experienced coach for Hockey and had trained four members of the team that obtained a bronze medal at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
