The Madras High Court reprimanded the Greater Chennai Corporations (GCC) over the current waterlogging situation in the city and warned of Suo Moto proceedings against the corporations if the situation is not brought under control by the weekend.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee and Justice P.D. Audikesavalu expressed their discontent while hearing a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking directions to widen the roads and remove the encroachments.
Chief Justice Sanjib Banerjee stated, “The city should not have experienced what it has been undergoing now as several parts were marooned. The Chennai Corporations should have initiated proper steps and ensure that the city has not inundated during the rainfall season.”
The Bench directed the Government to remove a private encroachment from Mamanakka Lake in a village. The Court Ordered the move as the Petitioner T. Tamilarasan, of Periyathirukkonam Village in Ariyalur District, filed a Petition for the same. The Bench also ordered the Government to maintain all water channels so that water could drain.
The Judges also noted that the Court has been through a lot of water logging cases. The Bench stated, “We are not a backward State. We are the most advanced State in the country in several aspects. So, the situation cannot be the one for a developed State in the country.”
The Court expressed its hope that the situation would improve in the upcoming days, otherwise the High Court would initiate Suo-Motu proceedings by this weekend.
