Delhi High Court Deprecates Advocate’s “Sealed Mouth” Protest

Published on: 05 December, 2025 14:11 IST

The Delhi High Court recently expressed strong disapproval regarding the conduct of Advocate R K Saini, who appeared in a contempt of court case with his mouth covered by red adhesive tape. This action, taken in symbolic protest against being “silenced,” was described by the bench of Justices Nitin Wasudeo Sambre and Anish Dayal as being “completely in poor taste and unexpected” for a lawyer with over 25 years of standing.

Saini removed the tape after being confronted, and when inquired, he explained that he had placed the tape on his lips because the court had stopped him midway during his arguments on the last two hearings. The Court clarified that the previous interruption was necessitated because his submissions were getting “too lengthy and repetitive”.

Although the bench considered passing appropriate orders against Saini, they refrained from doing so, “considering his standing”. However, the Court explicitly placed on record its strong displeasure towards his “unbecoming and unbefitting conduct”. The main case has been scheduled for further proceedings on January 21.
