The Delhi High Court sought responses from the Centre and three social media platforms Google, Facebook and Twitter on a petition seeking details of incorrect uploaders of the Hathras rape victim.
The bench of Justice Pratibha M Singh issued notices to the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technologies and mentioned social media platforms seeking their response.
The petitioner sought complete details of the originator of the offending material.
The photograph of petitioner’s deceased wife was being shared on given social media platforms wrongly depicting her as the victim of the ill-fated incident of rape and murder of a young girl in UP’s Hathras.
The petitioner’s counsel argued that revelation of identity of a rape victim is in itself an offence under Indian Penal Code.
The Court has directed the respondents to file their reply within two weeks.
Meanwhile, the Basic Subscriber Information (BSI) of the uploader has also been directed to be produced to the court.
Notably, Google, Facebook and Twitter had earlier this year informed the Court that they had blocked/taken down all links which incorrectly showed the deceased woman’s photograph as the Hathras rape victim.
