The Chief Justice of India NV Ramana while considering a petition filed before the Supreme Court of India expressed displeasure at the voluminous petitions being filed by the parties in their matters.
The CJI stated, “I wonder if the purpose of such bulky filing was to terrorize Judges to not read the entire petition.”
The plea which the CJI was hearing was related to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) tariff order. The CJI commented that, “The 51 volumes of the petition were filed and a lorry had to be arranged for carrying them. We can’t hear 51 volumes. What is the purpose of giving 51 volumes? You want to terrorize us by filing volumes and volumes! 51 volumes in one case!”
The CJI directed the advocate appearing for the petitioner TRAI to file a shorter compilation of the plea.
Similar kinds of remarks were made by the CJI while hearing the petitions filed by Amazon and Flipkart against the probe order issued by the Competition Commission of India.
Senior Advocate Dr Abhishek Manu Singhvi, appearing for the petitioner’s Amazon and Flipkart, proposed for filing a shorter compilation of the pleas but the CJI said that, “It may not be necessary, as he has read the files, despite their bulky nature.”
