The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has elected Lingayat MLA and Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai as the new Chief Minister of Karnataka.
BS Yediyurappa resigned from his post of Chief Minister of Karnataka with tears in his eyes after completing two years of his tenure with marked allegations of corruption and nepotism.
The announcement for the new Chief Minister was made by Central Observer and Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan.
Basavaraj Bommai, son of former Chief Minister SR Bommai, was the top contender for the Chief Minister’s post among all the Lingayat MLAs.

Bommai is a two-time MLC and three-time MLA from Shiggaon on the Haveri District.
Yediyurappa was among the first to congratulate the new Karnataka CM. “I am confident you will lead Karnataka in the path of development and fulfill the aspirations of people of the State,” tweeted the former Karnataka CM.
Speaking after staking his claim, Mr. Bommai thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the party, besides Mr. Yediyruappa, whom he described as his mentor.
“I have been chosen unanimously by the BJP. I will not fail the expectations of Mr. Modi, the party, Mr. Yediyurappa, and will give a pro-people administration. I will take all measures to improve the health of the flagging economy hit by the pandemic. I will serve the people with the blessings of the elders,” said Mr. Bommai.
Bommai will take oath at 11 AM on Wednesday at Rajbhavan.
