Israeli officials fear that the International Criminal Court (ICC) is preparing to issue arrest warrants for senior government officials over actions related to the conflict with Hamas, as per US Media Reports. The officials believe that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s name could be included in the warrants. The ICC is also reportedly considering warrants for Hamas leaders, though specific individuals and charges are not yet clear.
The potential warrants could stem from allegations that Israeli officials obstructed humanitarian aid to Gaza following a strong response to a Hamas attack on October 7. The exact nature of the information prompting these concerns has not been disclosed. The ICC has not made any public statement regarding this matter.
If issued, the warrants would be a significant moral blow, particularly for Israel, which has faced criticism, including from US President Joe Biden, over its actions in Gaza. The warrants could also impact Israel’s ongoing counter-offensive against Hamas. However, any warrants would require approval from a panel of judges and might not lead to immediate arrests or trials.
ICC Chief Prosecutor Karim Khan has previously stated that his office is investigating incidents during the conflict. Netanyahu has condemned any potential ICC intervention, stating that it would set a dangerous precedent and threaten democracies fighting terrorism.
The US administration has expressed its opposition to the ICC’s investigation into Israel’s actions in Gaza. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre emphasized that the primary focus of discussions between Netanyahu and Biden was securing a ceasefire and humanitarian aid for Gaza, as well as reaffirming US support for Israel’s security. Jean-Pierre reiterated the US position that the ICC does not have jurisdiction in this situation and that the US does not support the investigation.
