Chief Justice of India (CJI) Justice N V Ramana stated on Saturday that the Allahabad High Court’s 1975 verdict given by Justice Jagmohanlal Sinha was a Judgement of great courage.
The Judgement given by the High Court on 12th June 1975 disqualified the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi with the charges of electoral malpractice and banned her from holding any elected post under the Representative of Peoples Act.
Indira Gandhi had won the Lok Sabha Elections from Rae Bareli seat in Uttar Pradesh. She had defeated her opponent Raj Narain.
Raj Narain, then had alleged Gandhi’s victory as a result of electoral malpractices stating that Gandhi’s election agent Yashpal Kapoor was a government servant and that she had used the government officials for her personal election-related work.
The Judgement passed by the High Court eventually led to the imposition of emergency across the whole Nation on 25th June 1975.
The Chief Justice of India along with President Ram Nath Kovind recalled the rich contributions made by the Allahabad High Court while participating in the foundation stone laying ceremony of Uttar Pradesh National Law University and a new building complex of the High Court.
The Chief Justice also noted that Allahabad High Court has a rich history of more than 150 years and have established some greatest legal luminaries in the country.
